      They are doctors – they are both doctors. I learned from my parents how important it is to serve others. They chose to be doctors because they care so much about the health and well being of those around them. One might think I would want to become a doctor too. I do in a way, but I want to be a doctor to the world and I am certain that through the study of new energy, I can provide some healing to our world. My parents' example of the importance to do the best for others has deeply affected me. My identity is permanently affiliated with the word "healing". Without the great desire to serve and heal, which I learned from my parents, I would not know who I really am. As a child, I got the chance to engage with my parents' patients. Disease is one of the worst things that a person can endure, especially diseases like breast and lung cancer that my father, a surgical oncologist, handles. I could see the pain and desperation that my father’s patients experienced, and the same emotion would appear in my own heart. I understood that their emotions were a mixture of physical pain from a fatal disease and fear about the possible results. I might seem odd, bu

      In the spirit of Emory's tradition of courageous inquiry, what question do you want to help answer and why? (500 word limit) With only the dim light in the kitchen to guide us, I could barely see my classmates’ faces at the same table, and kept looking down to make sure I wasn’t stepping on anything. At this “Dinner in the Dark,” the founder of the Light Foundation, a philanthropic organization, introduced their purpose and goal to us. As the pages of the PowerPoint flashed by, I was shocked by the harsh lives of people who could not access electricity and amazed by the volunteers working to provide solar-powered LED bulbs. With a simple device and through raising awareness, the Light Foundation had solved the electricity problem for thousands in Africa. I realized that alternative energy is not only good for our environment, but is also the answer to questions many living in impoverished environments have to deal with every day. In the following summer, I jo
